Pablo Gutierrez Honored by Hartwick College

Pablo Gutierrez '25 of Cliffside Park, N.J., received the Linda S. French '85 Memorial Award in Business Administration during Honors Convocation held on April 30. Established in 1986 by the members of the Economics and Business Administration faculty in memory of Linda S. French '85, this award is made to a graduating senior major who has been a leader in the department.

Millicent Caldon Honored by Hartwick College

Millicent Caldon '28 of Gilmanton, N.H., was presented with two awards during Honors Convocation held on April 30. Caldon was awarded the Outstanding First-Year Student in Biology. This award is given to the first-year biology student who has attained the highest cumulative average for the year. Additionally, Caldon received The General Chemistry Achievement Award. This is presented on the basis of student performance in Chemistry 107 and 108, or in Chemistry 109.

Hartwick College Poets Honored by Academy of American Poets

Meer Singh '28 of Oneonta, N.Y., was named winner of the Anna Sonder Prize of the Academy of American Poets during Honors Convocation on April 30. Brynn Illies '25 of Watertown, Minn., received Honorable Mention. The prize was established in 1978 by the late Otto Sonder, professor emeritus of sociology, to recognize the best poem written by a Hartwick College student. It is awarded annually under the auspices of the Academy of American Poets in New York City, and honors the memory of Sonder's mother, Anna, who died that same year.

Berkleigh Bordeleau '27 of Brasher Falls, N.Y., received the Rob Jordan '98 Memorial Scholarship during Honors Convocation held on April 30. Established by fraternity members in memory of their brother, the scholarship is awarded to a rising junior demonstrating promise of success in the field of photography and a passion for the medium.

Alison Halstead Honored by Hartwick College

Alison Halstead of Oneonta, N.Y., received the Kay WalkingStick Award during Honors Convocation held on April 30. This award is given by Professor Emeritus of Art Phil Young in honor of the celebrated contemporary Cherokee artist Kay WalkingStick. It is given to a rising senior whose work embodies consistently outstanding accomplishment in painting. Additionally, Halstead received the Vice President's Purchase Prize. The black and white painting, titled Nina, will be displayed in the Office of Academic Affairs for a year before being added to the College archives.

This award is given by Professor Emeritus of Art Phil Young in honor of the renowned contemporary Flathead-Salish artist and activist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. It is given to a senior whose painting and multimedia work has been outstanding in experimentation and in visual strength.

Rebeka Alva Honored by Hartwick College

Rebeka Alva '26 of East Stroudsburg, Pa., received The Barbara F. Wilder H'93 and Philip S. Wilder, Jr. H'93 Citizenship Award during Honors Convocation held on April 30. This endowment was established in 1992 in honor of Dr. Philip S. Wilder, Jr., president of Hartwick College from 1977 to 1992 and his wife, Barbara F. Wilder. This scholarship is awarded to a rising senior whose career at Hartwick exemplifies outstanding leadership, campus citizenship and strong academic performance.

The scholarship also includes a stipend for a faculty mentor.

Established in 1991 by Lee and Sue Idleman in honor of their friends, the Mansbachs, this award is given to a rising sophomore with a minimum 2.7 GPA; a commitment to the liberal arts; demonstrated financial need; involvement with a community action agency, organization or institution in Oneonta; and clear promise of continuing that involvement throughout their Hartwick College career.

Tianna Wyskowski Honored by Hartwick College

Tianna Wyskowski '25 of Vestal, N.Y., was presented with two awards during Honors Convocation held on April 30. Wyskowski was awarded The Stephen L. Green '59 American Governance Award. Established in 2012 by Stephen L. Green '59, PM'05 to challenge students to not only strive for the best academically, but to also become informed and engaged citizens in our democracy. This award goes to a student submitting the top research essay on a current public policy challenge. Additionally, Wyskowski received the H. Claude Hardy Award in Sociology. Named for the late Professor Emeritus H. Claude Hardy, the award honors outstanding seniors in sociology.

Runyararo Chaora Earns Multiple Academic Honors at Hartwick College

Runyararo Chaora '25 of Harare, Zimbabwe, was recognized for her academic achievements during Honors Convocation held on April 30. Chaora received the Lynn S. Kanter Memorial Award, established by Dr. Robert J. Kanter '66 to honor a student who demonstrates a commitment to their chosen field, achievement acknowledged by a committee of faculty and staff, and the integration of the liberal arts into their education and life goals. She was honored with the American Chemical Society Award, which recognizes outstanding work by a senior in chemistry or biochemistry. Chaora also earned the David A. Diener Mathematics Achievement Award. Established by the Department of Mathematics in honor of Dr. David Diener, professor of mathematics from 1968 to 2000, the award recognizes mathematics majors for excellence in the field.

Established by Hartwick President Emeritus Richard A. Detweiler and his wife, Carol, the award supports international students who demonstrate educational commitment through academic achievement and who have financial need in order to remain at and graduate from Hartwick College.

Alayna Streeter '26 of Le Roy N.Y., received The Edith M. Lacey Memorial Nursing Scholarship during the College's Honors Convocation held on April 30. Established to memorialize Lacey, founder of the Hartwick nursing program and its director for nearly 18 years, the scholarship goes to a junior nursing student with demonstrated academic achievement and abilities (promise as a future nurse), personal deportment and other outstanding characteristics.
