During Honors Convocation on May 3, Mercurio was presented with the Richard K. Meeker Award in English. Established in memory of the late Professor Richard K. Meeker, the award recognizes an outstanding senior majoring in English. At the College's Athletics Award ceremony held on May 11, Mercurio received the True Blue Award, acknowledging him as a four-year letter winner. Mercurio is a Hartwick Hawks football team member.

Lucero Gomez of Nashville, TN, recognized with the Duncan B. Smith Award for Exceptional Creativity in Theatre during Hartwick College's Honors Convocation held on May 3. The award is presented to a student who has produced exceptionally creative work for a theatre class or production. Recipients are selected by the theatre arts faculty and receive a seminal text in the subject.

Peyton Humphries honored by Hartwick College

Peyton Humphries of South Glen Falls, NY, was presented with multiple awards during Hartwick College's spring recognition ceremonies. During Honors Convocation on May 3, Humphries received the Dr. David "Hutch" Hutchinson Award. Awarded by Hartwick's Department of Geology and Environmental Sciences, it was established by Dr. Hutchinson's student, Michael H. Young, Class of 1983. It is given to a rising junior or rising senior geology major for academic travel purposes including conferences, January Term programs, or thesis research. Selection is based on academic performance and financial need. At the College's Athletics Award ceremony on May 11, Humphries received the Philip S. Wilder Jr. Award for Academic Distinction, which is presented to athletes and/or managers of teams who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Humphries is a member of the Hawks men's swimming and diving team.

Sydney Gagnon honored by Hartwick College

Sydney Gagnon of Chestertown, NY, was presented with multiple awards during Hartwick College's spring recognition ceremonies. During Honors Convocation on May 3, Gagnon received the Frederick M. Binder Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given to a senior male and a senior female whose four years at Hartwick are a cumulative reflection of excellence in both scholarship and athletics. The award was created in memory of Dr. Frederick M. Binder, former president of Hartwick College. At the College's Athletics Award ceremony on May 11, Gagnon received the Anna M. Meyer Award. It is presented to an athlete on a female team judged as being the best athlete in the Hartwick Athletic Department whose character and sportsmanship have had a positive contribution within the team, the college and the community. Gagnon not only had an outstanding senior season for the Hawks, but also an exceptional career, earning multiple Empire 8 and regional awards. She capped off her career being named a Second-Team All-American. Gagnon also received the Philip S. Wilder Jr. Award for Academic Distinction, which is presented to athletes and/or managers of teams who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Additionally, Gagnon received the True Blue Award, acknowledging her as a four-year letter winner. Gagnon is a member of the Hawks field hockey team.

Fellows serve as student assistants in their major department and receive a tuition credit. Valenzuela also received the Franz Boas Award in Anthropology. It is presented to a graduating senior based on exemplary performance and service to the Anthropology Department. Additionally, Valenzuela was given the Semenenko Clark Award for Outstanding Senior Thesis Presentation. The award was established by Christine Semenenko to promote excellence in the Department of Art and Art History. Funds support students as they excel in their chosen area.

Gianny Ramos-Maya Wins Hartwick College Highest Honor

Gianny Ramos-Maya of Evans Mills, NY, was awarded a John Hartwick Scholarship (JCH), the highest distinction Hartwick can confer, during the College's Honor's Convocation on May 3. Established by the Hartwick College Board of Trustees in 1967 on the recommendation of then-president Frederick M. Binder, the award is given to rising seniors nominated by the faculty of their major departments and based on academic achievement, leadership and character. Students nominated to compete for the JCH Scholarship are named Faculty Scholars. From among the Faculty Scholars, six are selected by the College's Scholarship Awards Committee to receive the JCH Scholarships. Beginning in 1997, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the scholarship, each JCH Scholar receives a medallion, which is to be worn at commencement and other appropriate academic occasions. The names of this year's JCH scholars will join those of the 299 previous winners on a plaque located in the foyer of Hartwick's Stevens-German Library. In addition, each JCH Scholar receives a substantial tuition grant and an honored place among those who stand for the very best of Hartwick College. Ramos-Maya was named Faculty Scholar in Medical Technology. All scholars have excellent academic records and have demonstrated an outstanding mastery of their respective disciplines. Rising seniors are nominated by the faculty of their major departments based on academic achievement, leadership, and character. Additionally, Ramos-Maya was awarded the Albert H. Ubert Scholarship, established to provide an award to a student associated with an active campus ministry program demonstrating financial need, scholarship, and leadership.

Rising seniors are nominated by the faculty of their major departments based on academic achievement, leadership, and character. Additionally, Villalobos was awarded the Edith M. Lacey Memorial Nursing Scholarship, established to memorialize Miss Edith M. Lacey, founder of the nursing program at Hartwick and its director for nearly 18 years. It provides a scholarship to a junior nursing student with demonstrated academic achievement and abilities, promise as a future nurse, personal deportment and other outstanding characteristics.

Stephen also received the Mathematics Association of America Membership Award, which is given to junior or senior mathematics majors for high academic achievement and a high degree of professional promise in a mathematics-related career.

Brynita Jean Haas Honored by Hartwick College

Brynita Jean Haas of Red Creek, NY, was recognized with multiple awards during Hartwick College's spring recognition ceremonies. During Hartwick College's Honors Convocation on May 3, Haas was presented with the Helen & Howard Mayer Endowed Scholarship. Established in 1991, the scholarship is given to an academically able and financially deserving rising sophomore from western New York. Haas also received the Chemical Rubber Company Press Chemistry Achievement Award, which is presented on the basis of student performance in general or accelerated chemistry courses. During the College's Athletics Award Ceremony on May 11, Haas received the Philip S. Wilder Jr. Award for Academic Distinction, which is presented to athletes and/or managers of teams who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. A member of the women's indoor and outdoor track and field teams, Haas also received the Most Valuable Player award for cross-country.

The scholarship is awarded to a student with a 3.0 GPA who has demonstrated leadership in co-curricular activities and/or academics, and intends on pursuing a career or graduate study in medicine, athletics, sports medicine, physical therapy, sports management, or another area related to medicine, healthcare, or athletics, and has demonstrated financial need. Lawrence was also named a Faculty Scholar in Biology. Faculty Scholars have excellent academic records and have demonstrated an outstanding mastery of their discipline. Rising seniors are nominated by the faculty in their major departments on the basis of academic achievement, leadership and character. During the College's Athletics Award Ceremony held on May 11, Lawrence received the Philip S. Sofia Escobar Honored by Hartwick College

Sofia Escobar of Wantagh, NY, was recognized with multiple awards during Hartwick College's Honors Convocation on May 3. Escobar won the Anna Sonder Prize of the Academy of American Poets. Otto Sonder, late professor emeritus of sociology, endowed a prize in 1978 for the best poem written by a student at Hartwick College, to be awarded annually by the College under the auspices of the Academy of American Poets (AAP) in New York City. Hartwick College is a permanent member of AAP, which was founded in 1934 and is the largest organization in the country dedicated to advancing the art of poetry. To fulfill this mission, the academy administers a wide variety of programs, including the college prize program, which includes Hartwick College's Anna Sonder Prize. The prize honors the memory of Otto Sonder's mother, who died in 1978. Escobar was also recognized as an Andrew B. Saxton Undergraduate Fellow in Creative Writing. A fellow is selected by Hartwick faculty to recognize outstanding achievement. Fellows serve as student assistants in their major department and receive a tuition credit.
