Hannah Makuch Wins Highest Honor at Hartwick College

Hannah Makuch '26 of Carthage, N.Y., was awarded a John Christopher Hartwick Scholarship (JCH), the highest distinction Hartwick can confer, during the College's Honors Convocation on April 30. Established by the Hartwick College Board of Trustees in 1967 on the recommendation of then-President Frederick M. Binder, the award is given to rising seniors nominated by the faculty of their major departments for academic achievement, leadership and character. Students nominated to compete for the JCH Scholarship are named Faculty Scholars. From among the Faculty Scholars, six are selected by the College's Scholarship Awards Committee to receive the JCH Scholarships. Beginning in 1997, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the scholarship, each JCH Scholar receives a medallion, which is to be worn at commencement and other appropriate academic occasions. The names of this year's JCH scholars will join the previous winners on a plaque located in the foyer of Hartwick's Stevens-German Library. In addition, each JCH Scholar receives a substantial tuition grant and an honored place among those who stand for the very best of Hartwick College. Makuch, a chemistry and business administration major, was named Faculty Scholar in Business Administration and Chemistry. All scholars have excellent academic records and have demonstrated an outstanding mastery of their respective disciplines. Additionally, Makuch was awarded the Dr. Elizabeth V. Lamphere '38, H'97 Scholarship. Established through Lamphere's estate, the scholarship is awarded to a junior chemistry major with a GPA of at least 3.5 who is active in the Langmuir Chemical Society, also known as the Chem Club. She also received the Undergraduate Award for Achievement in Organic Chemistry, which is presented to a chemistry major with a B+ or higher GPA and outstanding performance in a two-semester organic chemistry sequence.

Sarah Matumbura Wins Highest Honor at Hartwick College

Sarah Matumbura '26 of Waterbury, Conn., was awarded a John Christopher Hartwick Scholarship (JCH), the highest distinction Hartwick can confer, during the College's Honors Convocation on April 30. Established by the Hartwick College Board of Trustees in 1967 on the recommendation of then-President Frederick M. Binder, the award is given to rising seniors nominated by the faculty of their major departments for academic achievement, leadership and character. Dylan Dwyer Wins Highest Honor at Hartwick College

Dylan Dwyer '26 of Chester, N.Y., was awarded a John Christopher Hartwick Scholarship (JCH), the highest distinction Hartwick can confer, during the College's Honors Convocation on April 30. Established by the Hartwick College Board of Trustees in 1967 on the recommendation of then-President Frederick M. Binder, the award is given to rising seniors nominated by the faculty of their major departments for academic achievement, leadership and character. From among the Faculty Scholars, six are selected by the College's Scholarship Awards Committee to receive the JCH Scholarships. Margarita Chistiakova Wins Highest Honor at Hartwick College

Margarita Chistiakova '26 of Yaroslavl, Russia was awarded a John Hartwick Scholarship (JCH), the highest distinction Hartwick can confer, during the College's Honors Convocation on April 30. Established by the Hartwick College Board of Trustees in 1967 on the recommendation of then-President Frederick M. Binder, the award is given to rising seniors nominated by the faculty of their major departments for academic achievement, leadership and character. From among the Faculty Scholars, six are selected by the College's Scholarship Awards Committee to receive the JCH Scholarships. Hartwick College Kellogg Prize Finalists Present at Honors Convocation

Integrating the arts in the classroom, starting out in the South Bronx, and raising a Guiding Eyes dog were three inspiring topics presented at the April 30 Honors Convocation for the 2025 Abraham L. Kellogg Oratorical Prize. Jae Stuchel '25, a theatre arts major, presented "Finding One's Voice: Artful Meaning." Kelechi Springer '25, a nursing major, spoke of drive and perseverance in his talk, "Another Bronx Tale." Roselyn DuMerville '25, an economics major with minors in actuarial mathematics and legal studies, presented "Guided by Henry." It was announced during Hartwick College's 93rd Commencement ceremony on May 17 that DuMerville was awarded the Abraham L. Kellogg Oratorical Prize for her speech. The award is given annually to a graduating senior who delivers the best oratorical presentation at Honors Convocation, as voted on by the faculty.

Sarah Kipruto Honored by Hartwick College, New York, United States

Sarah Kipruto of Nairobi, Kenya, was recognized with multiple awards during Hartwick College's Honors Convocation on May 3. Kipruto was named a Faculty Scholar in Mathematics. Faculty Scholars have excellent academic records and have demonstrated an outstanding mastery of their discipline. Rising seniors are nominated by the faculty in their major departments on the basis of academic achievement, leadership and character. Kipruto was also awarded the Dr. Ronald M. Brzenk Endowed Scholarship. Established in his honor by former student John C. Doolittle, the scholarship is awarded to a continuing mathematics major for outstanding academic achievement and professional promise in mathematics or a mathematics-related career.

Tristani Makharashvili of Tbilisi, Georgia, was awarded a John Hartwick Scholarship (JCH), the highest distinction Hartwick can confer, during the College's Honor's Convocation on May 3. Established by the Hartwick College Board of Trustees in 1967 on the recommendation of then-president Frederick M. Binder, the award is given to rising seniors nominated by the faculty of their major departments and based on academic achievement, leadership and character. Students nominated to compete for the JCH Scholarship are named Faculty Scholars. From among the Faculty Scholars, six are selected by the College's Scholarship Awards Committee to receive the JCH Scholarships. Beginning in 1997, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the scholarship, each JCH Scholar receives a medallion, which is to be worn at commencement and other appropriate academic occasions. The names of this year's JCH scholars will join those of the 299 previous winners on a plaque located in the foyer of Hartwick's Stevens-German Library. In addition, each JCH Scholar receives a substantial tuition grant and an honored place among those who stand for the very best of Hartwick College. Makharashvili was named Faculty Scholar in Computer Science. All scholars have excellent academic records and have demonstrated an outstanding mastery of their respective disciplines. Rising seniors are nominated by the faculty of their major departments based on academic achievement, leadership, and character. Additionally, Makharashvili was presented with an Andrew B. Saxton Undergraduate Fellowship in Mathematics. A fellow is selected by the Hartwick faculty to recognize outstanding achievement. Fellows serve as student assistants in their major department and receive a tuition credit.

Chaw Akari San Honored by Hartwick College, New York, United States

Chaw Akari San of Yangon, Myanmar, was recognized with multiple awards during Hartwick College's Honors Convocation on May 3. San was presented with the Detweiler Global Fund Award, which is given to an international student who has demonstrated their educational commitment through academic achievement and who also has financial need to remain at and graduate from Hartwick. The award was established by Hartwick President Emeritus Richard A. Detweiler and his wife, Carol. San also received the Otto Steinbach Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry. Established in memory of Chemistry Professor Otto Steinbach by his wife, Grace Steinbach, Hartwick Class of 1938, and former student Elizabeth Lamphere, Class of 1938, the scholarship is awarded to a rising junior or senior chemistry or biochemistry major who has demonstrated high academic achievement. Additionally, San was given the Undergraduate Award for Achievement in Organic Chemistry, which is presented to a chemistry major with a B+ or higher GPA and outstanding performance in a two-semester organic chemistry sequence.

Diener Mathematics Achievement Award. Established by the Department of Mathematics for excellence in the field, it is given in honor of David Diener, professor of mathematics at Hartwick from 1968-2000. It recognizes mathematics majors for excellent work in their field.

Chesachi Chisomaga Emeh Honored by Hartwick College

Chesachi Chisomaga Emeh of Lagos, Nigeria, was recognized with multiple awards during Hartwick College's Honors Convocation on May 3. Emeh received the H. Claude Hardy Award in Sociology. The award is named for the late Professor Emeritus H. Claude Hardy and honors outstanding seniors in sociology. Emeh was also recognized with the Duncan B. Smith Award for Exceptional Creativity in Theatre. The award is presented to a student who has produced exceptionally creative work for a theatre class or production. Recipients are selected by the theatre arts faculty and receive a seminal text in the subject. An Abraham L. Kellogg Oratorical Prize finalist, Emeh delivered his speech, "The Power of Name," during convocation. The Kellogg Prize is awarded to a graduating senior who delivers the best oratorical presentation as voted by the Hartwick faculty. He was named winner of the prize during the College's commencement ceremony on May 20.

Leah Tolley of Pittsford, NY, was recognized with multiple awards during Hartwick College's spring recognition ceremonies. At Honors Convocation held on May 3, Tolley was presented with the Linda S. French Memorial Award in Business Administration. The award was established in 1986 by the members of Hartwick's economics and business administration faculty in memory of Linda S. French, Class of 1985. This award is given to a graduating senior major who has been a leader in the department. During the College's Athletics Award Ceremony held on May 11, Tolley received the Philip S. Wilder Jr. Award for Academic Distinction, which is presented to athletes and/or managers of teams who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Tolley is a member of the Hawks field hockey team. .

Caitlyn Unger Honored by Hartwick College

Caitlyn Unger of Warwick, NY, was recognized with multiple awards during Hartwick College's spring recognition ceremonies. At Honors Convocation held on May 3, Unger received the E. Perrie Saxton Scholarship. The scholarship was established by the family and friends of former nursing professor and department chair, Edna "Perrie" Perrine Saxton, Class of 1953. The scholarship supports a rising junior or senior nursing student in either the three- or four-year degree program with demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to improve the health of their community. During the College's Athletics Award Ceremony held on May 11, Unger received the Philip S. Wilder Jr. Award for Academic Distinction, which is presented to athletes and/or managers of teams who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Unger is a member of the Hawks women's basketball team. .

Tricario is a member of the Hawks field hockey, and women's track and field teams. .

Meeker, the award recognizes an outstanding senior majoring in English. At the College's Athletics Award ceremony held on May 11, Mercurio received the True Blue Award, acknowledging him as a four-year letter winner. Mercurio is a Hartwick Hawks football team member.
